Best of 2023 -The In-Between Moments

This year I embarked on another year-long (away from work) journey delving into the pleasures of shooting more than just racing. Although digital is the way of the world my plethora of film cameras are my go-to, I set out to capture the essence of my experiences, creating many memories as well as in-between moments through each carefully composed frame.

There is something satisfying about loading a fresh roll and hearing that click echoing in my ears that you understand if you’ve also experienced. In a world dominated by instant gratification, this deliberate act feels like a ritual, a conscious decision to slow down and savor the art of photography.

Many work travel cities are my canvas, capturing the ebb and flow of life through the lens of my 35mm or digital cameras. From the vibrant chaos of crowded streets or bars to the quiet solitude of hidden alleyways, each frame tells a story, a snapshot frozen in time that reveals the experiences of home, travel and the way I see them.

Although a small handful of my favorites displayed here are digital, the tangible nature of film brings a tactile joy to my photographic endeavors. Feeling the weight of the camera in my hands, the resistance of the film advance, and the gentle click of the shutter transports me to a different era (I’m a sucker for old things). In a world obsessed with pixels and screens, the grain of film and the imperfections it has is now my visual signature outside of work, a testament to the authenticity of the craft.

Throughout the year, I found pleasure in the happy accidents—the serendipitous light leaks, the unexpected double exposures. These imperfections weren't flaws; they were the fingerprints of a unique artistic journey. They transformed my photographs into more than mere images; they became visual style, rich with layers of meaning to one’s own making.

As subjects and locations change, so did the color palette of my work. From the warm hues of summer to the cool tones of winter, seedy bars and beautiful landscapes, my camera became a storyteller, reflecting the moods and nuances of the changing months and environment. The fleeting nature of time became palpable with every click, a reminder to appreciate the transient beauty of the present moment.

In many hours of reflection, I realized that shooting in between moments is not just about capturing scenes but about immersing myself in the act of seeing. It is a meditation on the world around me, an opportunity to pause and appreciate the small details that often went unnoticed in the hustle of daily life.

As the year draws to a close, this collection of photographs stands as a visual diary of my experiences. Each image, a testament to the pleasures of shooting—a journey that transforms not only the way I photographed the world but also the way I perceived it. Through the lens of my cameras, I discover the joy that can be found in the intentional, the tactile, the accident and the art photography.
