In honor of tradition there were some things I just had to do today, Indianapolis 500 race day, 5/24/2020. I woke up at 4:30, the way I always do. My goal was to go capture my yearly race-day sunrise image. I felt comfortable knowing this might be my one and only normal routine of this particular race day.
To my surprise the first thing that caught my attention was how silent our IMS Photography staff office was. Those who spend time in the IMS media center know how colorful and interesting our staff is. The silence in this room on Indianapolis 500 raceday is pretty abnormal.
After spending some time soaking in the silence of IMS Photo, I made my way out to the front stretch to snap a few sunrise photographs and various other locations around IMS. You’ll find the theme repeating in images from the day, “The May That Never Was”. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t parts of the day that didn’t have a huge emotional impact on me. I’ve been on the IMS Photo staff for over 11 years and been to more Indianapolis 500’s in my personal life. The Indianapolis 500 pay’s for my rent, car payment and has taken me around this world. It’s the reason I live in the location I do. It has brought me many friends and loving relationships. It’s my life, It’s not gone, it’s not dead but it isn’t happening today. I guess that’s just something i’m having a hard time excepting and understanding today.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Indianapolis 500 has been scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020. The delay aside, this year will be one of the grandest races with many new improvements for fans!
Take a look at what Indianapolis 500 race day looks like with no race.
